Though the main story of Sea of Thieves: A Pirate’s Life focuses on the crossover with Pirates of the Caribbean and the introduction of Captain Jack Sparrow to the game’s world, there are also many side quests that do not directly tie in with the legendary captain and his mission to save the pirate’s life. The Cursed Captain is a new NPC that players can find and rescue, and he can join the crew and provide help from the palm of a player’s hand. Pirates first encounter Cursed Captain during the first Tall Tale, after exiting the caves of Sailor’s Grotto and entering the shipwrecked town of Sailor’s Grave. He will bark at players from overhead until they help free him from his cage, and players will not be able to progress the Tall Tale until they do so.

Freeing the Cursed Captain in Sea of Thieves: A Pirate’s Life is no small feat and requires players to do some climbing and puzzle-solving. Once they get the Cursed Captain’s cage down, they will need to find a key to totally free him and bring him along for the rest of the adventure. Fortunately, the solution is simple once players know where to go and what to look for. Here’s how to free the Cursed Captain during the first Tall Tale of Sea of Thieves: A Pirate’s Life.
Before players can free the Cursed Captain in Sea of Thieves: A Pirate’s Life, they will need to reach his cage. He has been tied to the end of a tilted mast near the tavern. He will provide some hints for players to help them get started and know they are on the right track, but the route to reach him is not immediately obvious.
Players will need to climb the stairs to the left of the Cursed Captain’s cage and go around the deck. They will see a broken mast leading from the deck to another capsized ship and will need to tightrope across. The Cursed Captain will encourage them when they get about halfway across the mast, letting them know they are going in the right direction.
Once players reach the upturned boat, they will need to drop down through the hole in the bow and swim through the cave to dry land. They should see a wooden floor and pulley to the right. Using the pulley takes them up a sort of elevator. At the top, they will see another pulley system that raises a scaffold with barrels and crates on top of it. They will need to vault across, jumping from the deck with the pulley to the barrels and crates and to the other side.
Pirates will then encounter the third pulley, which moves two wooden platforms closer together. They will want to move these platforms until they are nearly aligned and use them to get across the gap in the shipwreck. From the other side, they should be able to climb a set of stairs and tightrope across the mast where the Cursed Captain hangs. To release him, they will need to equip their lantern and light the rope on fire. He will tumble to the ground with the cage landing in another abandoned boat.
Freeing the Cursed Captain requires getting the key from his former crew. The Cursed Captain tells the player they will be found in the tavern, but the location of the key is less clear. It will be found on a skeleton sitting in the tavern’s chandelier.
To reach the chandelier, players should move to the back of the tavern and up the ramp. On the second level, by the ramp to the table with the gathered pirates and map, they should see another pulley. Using the pulley will lower the chandelier, allowing players to take the Cursed Captain’s cage key from the skeleton hanging from it.
Once players free the Cursed Captain in Sea of Thieves: A Pirate’s Life, they will be able to complete some of the side quests like Ship of Thieves and continue to the lighthouse to progress the Tall Tale. The Cursed Captain will continue to help and guide pirates during their journey in the expansion.
