  — Matt Law (@Matt_Law_DT) June 1, 2021

  6:24PM

”So I spoke with Trent three weeks ago. These stories and these headlines were so far off the truth. I read a lot of stories about myself that are miles off the truth, but that is my job. But with a player, sometimes聽they think that the manger is speaking to the press behind his back. So maybe they are puzzled: he is taking the set plays in training and then he reads that he is not going to the Euros. Lots of strange stories, I have no idea where they come from.

I would never normally speak to a player but I read a lot of stories about myself that are not true. I have to accept that this is the job I am in. It is no drama for me. I accept as the England manager.聽

Like when it said on the front page that I am the biggest fan of Great British Bake Off and I have Bake Off parties at my house and I am desperate to go on the show. The only thing true in the story was my age.

So I had to speak to Trent last night and say, look, I don’t know where this is all coming from. It is nonsense. People jump on it, say I have an agenda, that I don’t like the kid.”

  6:15PM

”It is going to be tight for the first game. But he is such a good player and because we have the size of squad, and his leadership which is growing all the time, we can take him.”

  6:12PM

”James, Jessie and Ollie were all brilliant when I told them. James has given himself every chance with his professionalism.”

  6:09PM

”He was a million miles away from getting in the squad earlier in this season. He has played so well for West Ham. He will play tomorrow, because we have got Sancho ill and we need the balance of the team.

It gives him a chance to go out there and prove me wrong right away! And we need to keep the back up players fit as well.”

”To be honest I had spoken to Mason on Friday, so the decision had been made then. I don’t know if it is because it was a Bank Holiday weekend that it didn’t come out…”

  6:06PM

”His leadership, his presence, is already having an impact on the group. Especially the younger ones, but everyone really.”

  6:05PM

”We went through this last week. Yes, we have four players who can play at RB for their clubs. Kyle has played at centre half in a three, he has played left back. James has played wing back. Trippier plays wing back.

All four of those are in our best 26 players.

If I could have picked a fifth or sixth right back I would have done!”

  6:04PM

I spoke to the three senior players yesterday and gave them all the option to go home if they wanted but, you know, if we do pick up injuries then those guys around the group would be the ones we would call on. I am thinking for instance of Trevor Sinclair at Japan 2002.

I bet a lot of these guys would have plenty of sympathy with Naomi Osaka.. Anyway, whether he likes it or not, Gareth Southgate is shortly going to be meeting the press, the lucky sausage. At least it’s on Zoom I guess.

  5:56PM

is saying that Gareth has said he might play Jesse Lingard against Austria – even though he is not in the squad. That cannot possibly be right, can it? That sounds mad if so.

  5:43PM

is in – but is that the right decision in terms of the squad balance?

  Jason Burt’s not so sure..,

Trent Alexander-Arnold debate is over – but this looks a lop-sided England squad

Of the 10 defenders, four normally ply their trade in the same position at right-back. Given Bukayo Saka鈥檚 adaptability in that he can play on the left of defence 鈥?even though he is listed as a forward 鈥?it means there are also potentially three left-backs.The rest of the squad? Five midfielders are listed and eight forwards. It points to the likelihood that Maguire is not fully fit and may actually miss England鈥檚 opening group games. Without Maguire, Southgate feels less comfortable playing a flat-back-four which means he may be about to again revert to 鈥榯hree-at-the-back鈥?with Kyle Walker or even Reece James on the right of that trio. Unlike in the World Cup in Russia in 2018 when England played 3-5-2, it looks more likely to be a 3-4-3 formation.

  5:33PM

Here’s Luke Edwards with a more than handy XI of England players who haven’t quite made it this time.

The best England XI to miss out on the Euros – and why they failed to make the cut

  5:30PM

”I knew that I had the ability and I have had a good season, I am very proud. Gareth briefed us before training this morning (and told us who would be in the 26) so I was buzzing.

”The first person I told was my mum, and I told her that I have got the number seven shirt. I was shocked myself, to be honest. I got told on a Whatsapp, and I got goose bumps.

”One thing I really like when I come to England is that there is a really good vibe. You have guys that are聽rivals on a Saturday but when we are here it is like friends getting together. I’d heard 15, 20 years ago that there were groups in the England squad, but really it is not like that now. Gareth really gets us together and we are mates.”

”I have never come here expecting to play, but yeah of course, getting in the XI is my goal. Everyone else in my position seems to have just played in a Champions League or Europa League final so it is difficult.”

”I had a conversation with John McGinn where I said, I dunno, if there’s only 10,000 fans maybe it would be better to wait, will you be able to hear a noise? And then we went out for the Villa warm up and I came back and I said Oh bro you were right it was very noisy.”

Both Gareth and Jack were talking on the England twitter channel.

  5:28PM

”We always recognise the opportunity we have to bring excitement. We want to help our country back on its feet and to give people something to enjoy and get together with their families. Of course, every country will feel the same.”

Congratulations to those selected for @England鈥檚 wonderful young squad. Good luck to all of you. Go do your country proud. https://t.co/VbJroHiUqJ

3 years on: the same three right-backs in the same numbers. Rashford a good 11. Coady, Mount, Chilwell, James same as for clubs. 1, 13 and 23 still keepers. Calvert-Lewin 1+8. Grealish/Sterling might have been switched but maybe too much of a statement.https://t.co/xQdsVnmCvM

  5:24PM

”If you are going to be a top player you have to be able to get on with the (rest of) the squad, that’s not just when you go away, but we will all be living together of course. But we have those qualities in abundance.”

  5:21PM

James was superb in Chelsea鈥檚 Champions League victory over Manchester City, while Walker and Trippier have enjoyed excellent seasons winning League titles at City and Atletico Madrid, respectively.

The omission of Watkins and Greenwood鈥檚 withdrawal means that there are only two out-and-out strikers in Southgate鈥檚 squad, those being captain Harry Kane and Everton鈥檚 Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Jordan Henderson鈥檚 return to fitness persuaded Southgate that he did not need Ward-Prowse, with Declan Rice, Kalvin Phillips and Jude Bellingham all getting in ahead of the Southampton man.

Southgate opted for the versatility of Bukao Saka, who can play on the wing or at wing-back, over Lingard, who was also pushed out by the return to fitness of Jack Grealish.

Alexander-Arnold may well start England鈥檚 first warm-up game against Austria on Wednesday night, with James and Walker unavailable. Trippier or Saka will be needed at left-back, with Luke Shaw and Ben Chilwell, who played in the Europa League and Champions League finals, not available.

Southgate will also be without James and Walker for that game, meaning Tyrone Mings and Conor Coady could partner each other in the centre of defence with Maguire and John Stones unavailable.

in the next few minutes, seems like it will be hard to top Luis Enrique’s decision to leave out Sergio Ramos AND not pick the maximum available squad.

Many in Spain have criticised Luis Enrique for leaving the star defender out, especially because the coach decided not to use two of the 26 spots available, with Ramos potentially benefiting the聽squad聽with his experience and leadership even if he wasn’t fully fit.

”In the end, these decisions are made by the coach, he is the one who announces the list,” said Koke. “It wasn’t only Sergio Ramos who was left out, but also other very important players for their clubs, and other very important players for Spain. We have to respect these decisions.”

Luis Enrique said he didn’t want to pick a full complement of 26 players because some wouldn’t end up being used at all.

  4:29PM

  by the way.

Middlesbrough’s Riverside Stadium will be the setting as the Three Lions play two warm-up games against Austria (June 2) and Romania (June 6).

Capacity has been capped at 25 per cent, due to ongoing coronavirus restrictions, so more than 8,000 fans will be allowed to attend each match. Will seem like a veritable cauldron following almost a season of silence in empty stadiums in the Premier League.

at 5pm UK time. Perhaps he is, as we speak, giving six lads the sad news. Shame.

  1:35PM

Everyone knows that being England manager is one of the hardest jobs in the world (obviously there are far tougher ones we can think of but this is the sport section so, from time to time, we say stuff like this…). And for our very own Jim White telling the unlucky six they won’t be part of the 26-man squad will be his toughest task. So right now Gareth Southgate is undertaking the hardest part of the hardest job. You imagine he’ll need a lie down once all his media duties are over today.

Everyone of a certain vintage remembers the reaction of Gazza when Glenn Hoddle told the midfielder he wasn’t part of his World Cup ’98 squad…

”Poor Paul Gascoigne, a man prone to nerves, tried to assuage his trepidation by consuming large amounts of alcohol. Perhaps unaware of the growing issue, the manager had made the mistake of leaving him until late on his list. An increasingly fraught Gazza decided he could wait no longer for confirmation of his immediate personal future. He burst into Hoddle鈥檚 room and demanded to know what was happening. And, as the manager attempted to explain that he was dropped, he smashed the place up, gashing a shin in the process.”

”Mason Greenwood has withdrawn from the provisional England squad in order to recover fully from an underlying injury that also kept him out of the Under-21 Euros in March,” said a United statement.

”Mason’s club appearances were managed carefully to maintain his availability through the intensive 2020-21 Premier League and Europa League schedule but a further spell of tournament football would not be beneficial and Mason will recuperate and prepare for pre-season training.”

Group B: Russia (Saint Petersburg Stadium), Denmark (Parken Stadium, Copenhagen)*

Group C: Netherlands (Johan Cruijff ArenA, Amsterdam)*

Group D: England (Wembley Stadium, London)*, Scotland (Hampden Park, Glasgow)

Group E: Spain (Stadium La Cartuja Sevilla)*

Group F: Germany (Football Arena Munich)*, Hungary (Pusk谩s Ar茅na, Budapest)

In that sense Greenwood’s withdrawal has given the England coach a helping hand, making one decision for him.聽

As Chris Bascombe writes: “Southgate鈥檚 provisional squad underlined the depth of attacking talent, England top heavy with strikers but short of world-class central midfielders and centre-backs. …who is saying that Jesse Lingard and James Ward-Prowse will both miss out when the squad is named later this afternoon.

  10:17AM

Trent Alexander-Arnold leads a group of players anxiously waiting to hear if they have been cut from Gareth Southgate鈥檚 final 26-man squad for this month鈥檚 European Championships.

The Liverpool defender, one of four specialist right-backs named by the England manager in his original party, looks the most high-profile player under threat as he makes his final selection.

Southgate opted not to notify the seven players who are to be cut from his preliminary 33-man group, named last week, ahead of today鈥檚 announcement.

Instead, they will learn of their fate today as Southgate prepares for friendlies in Middlesbrough this week, against Austria tomorrow and Romania on Sunday, and the opening group game against Croatia a week on Sunday.

Southgate has left his decision making until the last possible moment – this afternoon鈥檚 Uefa deadline – an indication of just how tough he has found the selection.

And the process has been complicated by the injuries to Manchester United defender Harry Maguire and Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson that kept the pair sidelined over the final games of the domestic season.

But Alexander-Arnold looks likely to be the most significant 鈥渧ictim鈥?of Southgate鈥檚 cull, a consequence of the strength England can boast in his right-back position.

Manchester City鈥檚 Kyle Walker and Reece James of Chelsea each played key roles in helping their teams to the Champions League Final while Kieran Trippier was equally impressive in Atletico Madrid鈥檚 shock Spanish league title success.

Alexander-Arnold has been left out of England鈥檚 last seven internationals, having last started for Southgate in the Nations League win over Belgium in October, and looks like being left to face further disappointment.

Of the remaining players under pressure, the new call-ups to Southgate鈥檚 initial 33-man squad – Aaron Ramsdale, Ben Godfrey and Ben White – seem most likely to be omitted, while Ollie Watkins, who won his first cap and scored with his first international shot on target against San Marino in March, also looks on the brink.

James Ward-Prowse and Bukayo Saka have clearly caught the England manager鈥檚 eye but the form of others may cost them their places – especially with the versatile Saka being listed as a 鈥渇orward鈥?on Southgate鈥檚 initial squad list.

Ultimately, Southgate鈥檚 decision making may well hinge on the fitness reports around Maguire and Henderson, with the England manager admitting he had not been offered any detailed information by Manchester United of the former鈥檚 fitness status prior to last Wednesday鈥檚 Europa League Final.

The chance to assess the duo up until the last possible moment is another reason for Southgate delaying his squad announcement.
